I guess I'm just trying to say that sometimes less is more. I've found that having too many options can lead to creative paralysis.

I agree. One day, someone pointed out to me that unless we're in a cover band using all the sounds from those albums, we usually only have 3 or 4 tones - a clean, a dirty, and a lead (and maybe an overdrive, too).
Think back to the classics - Van Halen, Black Sabbath, Hendrix, Iron Maiden... most anything from 1984 on back... it was whatever they could squeeze out of a Marshall stack and a chorus/phase shifter/flanger/wah pedal.

Exactly. I think I read recently that Tom is using the same tone for all his patches, but that he has 3 different volume levels. Then as you said, they are flavored differently with effects.
You'll also notice he uses very little echo though. It's usually just a short slapback.
