What amp do you use with Rockman Gear?

Post by carl170 »

Just wondering if there are any amps commonly used with with the Rockman gear?

I know there was the re-badged Carver 175, but are there any others that sound similar?

Also, does anyone know what the amp in the XP100 is?

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer. So much gear, so little time!

Regards

I'm not the most expert of this crowd but I believe any decent PA amp should do. The Rockman gear is mostly intended for amplification by flat-response amplifiers and speakers. If you are doing something live, just run the Rockman gear through the front of house sound system. If you are recording, run the Rockman gear directly to the mixing board. I have a little Alesis Sumo for now. It's not great, but is handy.

The amp in the XP 100 was custom designed for it. Despite having a Rockman 500 amp, I've been using a Sony reciever with mine for 20+ years.

These guys hit it on the head. Clean, uncolored amplification is what was meant - such as you'd find in PA systems. Going direct has been my thing.

I've wondered about using those little 22 Caliber amp/guitar pedals. They're small and sound pretty decent.

Can anyone recommend an amp they are using (or maybe link to one?) I fancy building my own sort of XP-100 - something like this:

Maybe a rackmount 50-100W PA type amp? I had been thinkiing one of the old solid state marshalls (8080 gold) or a rocktron velocity? Would these colour the sound too much?

Thanks

If you have some guitar amp sitting around, I'd do some experimenting with it and your Rockman gear. The Sustainor, Distortion Generator and XPR manuals all provide some guidance on tailoring the output section settings for a guitar amp. That might help you decide.

You'll need to play and see what sounds best to YOUR ears. Different power amps might color the sound, different speakers, different cabinets, and different rooms will also.

This looks very interesting but it would take two of them for stereo operation, if I understand correctly you can use it as more than an anutator , a sort of amp for preamplifiers and run output to mixing board out to recording or to house mains. Wonder if it would make the rockman sound more vintage (marshall) and less flat.

I like running my Rockman gear through a Crown XLS1000 with Peavey 3-way PA speakers. Nice full range response!
