New Mod for the Stereo Echo

Post by RockmanCentralBob »

I have been playing with that Stereo Echo since I got it fixed and finally managed to figure out a mod I've been working on for a couple of years.... I suppose I'll call it the Tom mod since we already have a Gary Pihl mod for the Stereo Echo.

Tom uses 2 Stereo Echo's, one set for a plate reverb sound and the other set up for a long, space delay. I finally figured out how to mod a Stereo Echo to do both of those sounds using a footswitch, without getting the "swoosh" sound when changing between the settings (obviously, or having to use 2 modules).

Next I'm going to redesign the Gary Pihl mod, which allows you to lower the Echo volumes so they are more of a reverb type wash for rhythm playing instead of the delays being too upfront like you would want for lead. I think I figured out an easier way to do the mod using only 1 channel of a 4053 switching IC instead of the current 2 channels needed for that mod. This way, I could add both mods by adding just a single 4053. As an added benefit, it is also much easier to perform and requires a lot fewer jumper wires and cutting of traces.

I love coming up with useful mods for the Rockman gear that allows me to get more out of them without having to use multiple modules!!!
These mods are right up there with the 4 Channel mod I came up with for the Sustainor!

They both sound fantastic!! You should record samples of both.

Sounds like a plan, Bob! Good luck!

:D

I use two Stereo Echoes in my main Sustainor setup for that reason. Although I'm thinking about adding a stereo spring reverb...

Here's a quick demo of the Stereo Echo mods

Long Delay and Phil mod Off
Long Delay Pihl mod On (lower delay volumes)
Short Delay and Phil mod Off
Short Delay Pihl mod On (lower delay volumes)
Ok, I couldn't help myself!!

Here is the short delay (full delay volume) in a mix...
BTW, the change to/from Clean was done with an expression pedal using the Kemper Morphing feature.
No patch changes were made!

It's fairly extensive.... I would have to draw it up as a schematic.
I'll see if I can get to it...
