First post here! Rockman x100 trim pot issue

Post by Keeter »

Hello everyone. I'm glad this forum is here because these headphone amps and all of the other SR&D gear are awesome and deserve to continue rocking for generations to come. I recently acquired an x100 that was lovingly used over the years but needed a facelift. I have some electronics schooling from my 23 years in the USN and Air Force. I recapped the unit with Nichicon FG series audio caps and this made a huge difference in the background noise. I also replaced the Rockadapter cap as well. The only issue that I have now is that when I put slight pressure on the trim pot, it makes a loud hum, similar to when you touch a 1/4" jack which is connected to a guitar amp. It seems like maybe a grounding issue, but I'm not sure. Maybe this is normal? I'm not using my x100 through a guitar amp, just headphones (not the original headphones but very good quality ones).

Now, before you say "just don't touch the trim pot", I would like to know if anyone else has experienced this. If it is a sign that something else needs fixed I would appreciate your thoughts on what to look for. I'm brand new to this Rockman subculture. I am looking forward to sharing my experiences with refurbishing and using my x100. The first thing I noticed is that these audio grade electrolytic capacitors ( through hole radial type) are getting harder to find, as well as, many of the electro-mechanical parts.

If you x100 users out there wouldn't mind trying to duplicate this issue, please let me know. If yours does the same thing it must be just part of the personality of this design. It will give you an excuse to play some Boston riffs again....

Take care,
Keith

Hey Keith, welcome to the forum. I wish I could help here, but I haven't worked on the X100s before. Maybe one of the other members can offer some suggestions. Again, welcome.
