Boston's Gear

The equipment produced by SR&D has a very close relationship with the band Boston and its music. This is the place for discussing Boston.

I'll play. It looks like both Gary and David have a "clean" (CLN/CLN2) and "distortion" (DIST/EDGE) Sustainors. They both have the MIDI Octopus to control things. I wonder where the PGE2's and Smart Gates sit in the lineup? The output of the Sustainers?

What I wonder is why the Rev 20 is Gary's clean sustainor while the prominent features of the unit are in the distortion settings. Mainly the autoclean

Maybe he likes the blue face Sustainor distortion better?

You also have too consider that Gary has way different guitar parts, solos, and sound than Tom.
I also think that over the last few years that Toms live sound has gotten better and his studio sound has devolved.

Tom's studio sound has devolved? I don't agree with that at all. Listen to Third Stage and then compare that to LLH. LLH has way more definitition and clarity i. The guitar tracks.

I'll wildly speculate in another direction. Maybe it was a bad week on the road and the distortion circuit in the Rev 20 was broken?

And I'll throw another one in.... perhaps being in a band with so much going on sonically, they each need much less distortion.

Plus, I don't see dozens of Sustainors in each rack. They're not nuts like us. Maybe a 100 Sustainor is enough to get the job done (or simply has the right tone, or a different tone).
